WILSON PODIUMS AT TOOWOOMBA SUPERCROSS
Team Suzuki Press Office – November 15.
Raceline Pirelli Suzuki’s rising star Jay Wilson finished third in the Under 19s Main Event at Toowoomba’s third round of the 2012 Australian Supercross Championships in Queensland at the weekend.
Wilson (18) led early on in the reduced 10-lap final, contested in difficult and muddy conditions that challenged the sport’s best throughout the evening. He eventually placed third aboard the RM-Z250 and maintains that same position in the series with one round remaining.
Said Wilson: “I got the holeshot for the final; it was a good start and then I was able to pull a bit of a gap. I felt comfortable and like I was doing everything good, but lost focus and probably rode too safe. I started making some mistakes and I was a bit disappointed, but next time I’ll make sure I don’t make the same mistake and keep doing what I’ve got to do.”
New Zealand Pro Lites Rookie Scott Columb was ninth in the 15-lap Main Event on his RM-Z250, battling through the final and into the top 10 despite a number of crashes during the race. Columb is now ranked an impressive fifth in the standings after three of four rounds.
“In the qualifying I was fifth, which is my best ever result, and I felt good for the round,” said Columb. “I got a good start in both the heat and Main Event, but in the final I ran off the course and crashed a total of three times. I came from last to ninth, but it wasn’t a great day. Mud events either go good or bad and I would say mine was just average.”
Last year’s Under 19s champion Errol Willis broke through for his first Lites class heat race win, but his night soon turned pear-shaped with a number of mistakes in trying conditions during the Main. Willis is 18th in the series entering Newcastle’s finale this weekend.
Said Willis: “The heat race went good, I managed to win that and had the first gate pick for the final. I got a decent start, but used too much rear brake in the first corner and stalled it. My night went downhill from there, but I was able to salvage some points in 13th. This year hasn’t been what we’ve been looking for but hopefully we can turn it around at the last round and finish on a high note.”
The Australian Supercross series will wrap up this weekend at Newcastle’s fourth and final round on Saturday.
